Lemuria Land in Nosy Be: lemurs, giant tortoises and ylang-ylang
A lemur climbing onto your shoulder, giant tortoises taking their time, the scent of ylang-ylang drifting from the distillery: Lemuria Land is one of the easiest and most popular visits in Nosy Be, especially for families. Here is what you will see, the practical details, our tips, and how to combine the visit with Mont Passot at sunset.
Lemuria Land at a glance
Lemuria Land is a private park in the south of Nosy Be, about 4 to 5 km from the centre of Hell-Ville, on the road from the stadium towards Mardoka. It was set up in the middle of an ylang-ylang plantation, next to the SPPM distillery, one of the best known on the island. In a single visit you discover much of Madagascar's iconic wildlife, along easy, shaded paths.
It is an ideal first encounter with lemurs, a great visit for families with children, or a half-day between two boat trips.
What you will see
- Lemurs: around ten species live in the park in semi-freedom, including the black lemur (males are black, females reddish-brown), the ring-tailed lemur and the crowned lemur.
- Giant tortoises: you can watch them up close, which children love.
- Reptiles: chameleons, crocodiles, Madagascar boas and geckos.
- The ylang-ylang distillery: a visit to the SPPM distillery is included in the entrance fee. You see how the flowers are distilled into the essential oil that earned Nosy Be its nickname, the "perfumed island".
- The garden: ylang-ylang, vanilla, vetiver, bamboo and fruit trees such as cocoa and jackfruit, plus an exhibition of insects and butterflies.

Our tips for the visit
- Come in the morning. From opening to late morning, lemurs are more active and it is cooler.
- Mind Sundays. The park closes at 1 pm, so plan your visit from Monday to Saturday.
- Follow the park guide's instructions. Let the animals come to you, without grabbing or feeding them yourself.
- What to wear: closed shoes or walking sandals, a hat, water, and insect repellent in the rainy season.
- Photos: a smartphone is enough, the animals are very close.
Combine it with Mont Passot
At 329 metres, Mont Passot is the highest point of Nosy Be, with a panoramic view over the west of the island and its islets. It is surrounded by several crater lakes, considered sacred by local people. A concrete road leads to the summit, and it is at its best at the end of the day: the sunset over the sea is one of the most famous on the island.
Lemuria Land in the morning and Mont Passot in the late afternoon make a full, varied day with no boat, ideal when the sea is rough.
