Ramena · Emerald Sea · Three Bays
A peaceful Vezo-Antakarana fishing village on a long bay of white sand, twenty minutes from Diego — colorful pirogues, seafood stalls and views of Nosy Lonjo.
A shallow turquoise lagoon sheltered by sandbanks and reached by boat — some of the clearest water in the region for swimming and snorkeling.
A wild trio of bays north of Ramena, shaped by dunes and powerful trade winds — a favorite of kitesurfers and travelers seeking deserted beaches.
A rainforest-covered volcano rising above the dry north, with crater lakes, waterfalls and a dense population of chameleons and lemurs.
A granite dome overlooking Diego Suarez Bay, climbed for one of the best panoramic views of the coast and the Emerald Sea.
A limestone ridge dotted with caves and old colonial fortifications, combining dry-forest trails with breathtaking views of the bay.
Needle-like formations of red laterite, sculpted by rain and wind over the centuries — most spectacular at sunset, when the rock glows orange.
A vast limestone plateau of grey tsingy, deep canyons and underground rivers, home to caves, bats and several species of lemurs.
A lesser-known reserve on the edge of Ankarana, with its own tsingy formations and dry-forest trails — a quieter alternative away from the main circuit.
Diego Suarez offers a wide variety of landscapes: the Emerald Sea (turquoise lagoon), Ramena (fishing village), Amber Mountain (rainforest), Sugar Loaf (panoramic views), the Red Tsingy (laterite formations), and the Ankarana and Analamerana reserves.
The dry season from May to October is ideal for visiting Diego Suarez. Temperatures are pleasant and conditions are perfect for boat trips and hikes. Avoid the rainy season (November to April).
