Honeymoon in Nosy Iranja: the guide to a perfect honeymoon
Two islands, a long ribbon of white sand joining them at low tide, turquoise water and almost nobody around once the day boats have left: Nosy Iranja looks like it was designed for a honeymoon. From Nosy Be, where we live, here is how to really enjoy it, without spending your honeymoon in crowds or on transfers.
Why Nosy Iranja for a honeymoon
Nosy Iranja lies south-west of Nosy Be, about 1 to 1.5 hours by boat depending on the boat and the sea. It is made of two islands: Iranja Be, the larger one, with its fishing village and lighthouse, and Iranja Kely, the smaller one, where sea turtles come to nest. Between them, a white sandbank appears at low tide and you can walk across it with your feet in the water.
For a couple, it is the perfect place for the photos you will keep forever, but also for what you cannot photograph: the silence, the warm water, the walk up to the lighthouse with a view over the whole archipelago. It is further away than Nosy Komba or Nosy Tanikely, so a little less busy, especially early in the morning and late in the day.
Day trip or a night on the island?
| Option | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Day trip on a shared boat | Tight budget, short stay | The simplest option, but you share the boat and the sandbank with other groups. |
| Day trip on a private boat | Couples who want their own pace | Leave when you like, stop where you want, lunch just for two. Our favourite option for newlyweds. |
| One (or two) nights on the island | A "wow" honeymoon | The island empties in the late afternoon: sunset, stars and the sandbank almost to yourselves. Limited accommodation, book well in advance. |
Our recommendation: if your budget allows, spend at least one night on Nosy Iranja. The difference between the island at noon and the island at sunset is the difference between a nice excursion and a true honeymoon memory.
Best time for your honeymoon
| Period | What to know |
|---|---|
| April – June | End of the rains, green landscapes, still few visitors. A very good option. |
| July – August | Dry season and high season: great weather, but busier. Book early. |
| September – November | Often very calm seas, warm water, excellent visibility. Our favourite time for Nosy Iranja. |
| December | Start of the rainy season: showers mostly in the afternoon, humid heat. Possible, with some flexibility. |
| January – March | Rainy and cyclone season: boat crossings sometimes cancelled. Best avoided for a honeymoon. |

Our local tips
- Check the tides: you cross the sandbank at low tide. We time the boat with the tides so you arrive at the right moment.
- Ask which boat you will take: the crossing is long. A fast boat in good condition makes the day much more pleasant, especially on a honeymoon.
- Leave early: the sea is usually calmer in the morning, and you enjoy the sandbank before other groups arrive.
- Respect the turtles: on Iranja Kely, do not walk on nesting areas and keep away from nests.
- Bring cash in ariary: villagers sell beautiful embroidered tablecloths and sarongs, a lovely honeymoon souvenir.
- Protect yourself from the sun: sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. The glare on white sand is strong.
Extend your trip: northern Madagascar for two
With 10 to 14 days, add 3 or 4 days in the north before or after Nosy Be, with a private driver-guide:
- Diego Suarez and the Emerald Sea: a turquoise lagoon for a day on the water.
- The Three Bays: almost deserted beaches.
- The Red Tsingy: spectacular red clay formations, especially late in the day.
- Amber Mountain and Ankarana: forests, lemurs, chameleons and grey tsingy.
It is a classic and very successful combination: a few days of gentle adventure in the north, then the sea and rest in Nosy Be and Nosy Iranja to end on a high. For an idea of prices, read our article Nosy Be excursion prices.
